For those who enjoy hiking in beautiful western Nebraska, try geocaching!  My 7 yr old son and I are beginning to explore this (I just purchased my own GPS system at Cabellas and I'm "fiddling" with it) and it's been a great experience.  PLUS-those of you who would like to do gps lesson with upper elementary/high school students, try geocaching!! :)

Go to www.geocaching.com to learn more and have fun!!!

  2. I am interested in this...my students will be talking about it and I have no idea what it is. My husband has a GPS that he bought went he worked in Oklahoma last summer. I will have to check out the website.

  3. I am working on a  unit on google earth, gps systems and geocaching to use this fall. I am just now learning more about geocaching. I want to hide items in our city park and have students go out and find them as a beginning introduction lesson.

  4. We just spent an enjoyable day at Buffalo Creek Wildlife Management Area Saturday and found we were only 1 of 2 groups there. It would be a great place to geocache!

here is a map of the area it is south and west of Melbeta

  5. I have taken my fourth grade class geocaching the last three years. They love it. We split up in groups and wentwith adults  to various cache sites within 30-40 miles of our town and then met back at the city park and I turned them loose in groups with a GPS to find caches I had hidden that morning with little things in them like Matchbox cars etc that I picked up at the Dollar Tree.

  6. Our 6th grade class went to Wildcat Hills outside of Scottsbluff and we split up into groups and each had a digital camera and a gps system.  We all took a trail and we gave the students instructions to take photos of plants, trees, interesting grasslands, etc. and once they took the photo, they had to "mark" that spot using the gps (we taught them and the adult leader how to do that) and then at the end, we came back and researched the plant/wildlife the students took pictures of and created a map-inserted our photos with the names (and scientific names), put the lat./long. of where these photos were taken, and other items for a map of our trails.

The students had a wonderful time!  If we had more time, I would have geocached with them.  Instead, we did another unit of geocaching with 5th graders.  I was surprised of how many geocaches were in our area!
