The world of standars-assessment-accountability is not generally filled with much humor. I was at a training session in Lincoln last week and had the opportunity to view this video. Tom Chapin is the creator of the video.

  1. Great video!  Unfortuately, I feel this is what education is becoming.  I have had several conversations with teachers in our district that feel they have no time to teach the "extra stuff" and no time to get to know their students.  One teacher, who has taught for 30 years, says that she feels she really doesn't have the relationships with her students that she used to have, due to testing.  She feels that all we to is test or prepare to test.  When do we have time to teach anymore?  Getting to know your students happens when you teach the "stuff" that isn't on tests.  Now we have to say, "I'm sorry, we don't have time to hear about your weekend, Johnny, we need to get to work."  And, maybe we are all that student has.  Maybe we could help save some students if we only had time for them and not just time for tests.  Families aren't what they used to be, and now schools aren't a place for students to get the care they need.  Where are we headed?

Some have commented that with the adoption of a state test, we can have more time for teaching and students...I beg to differ.  I feel that a state test will only highten the stress of achievement.  Districts will be compared, teachers will be compared, students will be compared.  This will only add to the load and add more competition and dare I say it... cheating.  What ever happened to doing what is best for students???
